Clinical Observation of Tuberculosis of the Hip Joint


Abstract
Clinical observation were done on 51 cases of tuberculosis of the hip joint treated at the department of Orthopaedic Surgery,¢¥ Pusan National University Hospital from February,. 1958 to July, 1965. The results were as follows;
1. In this series, 23 cases were under 10 year of age, and the average was 15.3 years.
2. Ratio between male and female was 1.7:1.
3. Significant clinical features found to this series were limitation of joint function, (51 cases), flexion contracture(19 cases) and dislocation of the hip(6 cases).
4. Rentgenologically, bony lesions were found in 21 cases at the femoral head, 4 cases at the femoral neck, 10 cases at the acetabulum, and 6 cases at the synovium, and the undetermined form in 10 cases.
5. High sedimentation rates were also noticed in all cases. Average increase in sedimentation rate was 63.3 mm/hr.
6. 26 cases were treated conservatively, while remainders were treated surgically. Britain¢¥s hip fusion was done in 12 cases; focal curettege and intra and extra-articular fusion with bone graft in 12 cases, and subtrochanteric osteotomy in 5 cases.
